Sri Lanka Tea Board Affirms Rapid Stabilization of Ceylon Tea Industry Post-Cyclone Ditwa

The Sri Lanka Tea Board today affirmed the industry’s exceptional resilience and swift return to operational stability following the severe disruptions caused by Cyclone Ditwa across the Central and Uva Provinces. While the storm inflicted considerable damage to infrastructure and tragically impacted our workforce, the collective response from growers, manufacturers, and exporters has ensured that the backbone of the Ceylon Tea production chain remains intact. The industry is operating under a coordinated national recovery strategy, focused on supporting affected communities and maintaining global supply.

Crucially, we can confirm that other than a few isolated incidence there have been no reported loss of permanent factory or manufacturing capacity within the Ceylon Tea sector. Despite initial projections of a significant drop in production due to temporary labor shortages and weather severity, most of our factories were not affected. The immediate focus on securing and restoring these manufacturing centers paid off, allowing the processing of green leaf to stabilize as estate workers gradually returned to work with the swift restoration of accessibility across the affected regions.

The logistical challenge posed by damaged regional roads is being addressed with priority. Key arteries connecting plantations to the city and transport hubs are being diligently reopened, ensuring the continuous flow of green leaf to processing centers and finished tea to warehouses. Furthermore, to safeguard the vital liquidity of the entire supply chain, including the smallholders. The Colombo Tea Auction schedule has been swiftly and strategically adjusted, guaranteeing uninterrupted financial support and market momentum for our producers.

However, the primary hurdle to a full restoration of export capacity lies in the damage sustained in specialized post-processing and packaging machinery.  Most of the tea companies have taken precautionary measures to protect their equipment/machinery to minimize the potential damage with timely relocation. The industry stakeholders are prioritizing the repair and restoration of these machinery and equipment. This issue is being addressed with urgency to mitigate any long-term delays in delivering value-added Ceylon Tea. Stakeholders across the industry have joined hands to ensure the supply chain remains uninterrupted.

The global reputation of Ceylon Tea is founded on unwavering quality and the spirit of its people. We commend the Central Bank and government stakeholders for their rapid deployment of temporary debt relief and financial support measures. We assure all international partners and consumers that every measure is being taken to ensure consistent supply and quality. The industry has weathered far greater storms, and our current collective effort demonstrates our confidence in emerging from this challenge stronger, ensuring Ceylon Tea remains a reliable pillar of the global market.

Sri Lanka’s Participation at the 10th Asia-Pacific Tea Competition – August 2025 – China

The Sri Lanka Tea Board, in collaboration with the Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing (SLEMB-TPU), successfully represented Ceylon Tea at the 10th Asia-Pacific Tea Competition held in China this August 2025. Competing with over 5,000 tea samples from around the world, Sri Lanka proudly secured 48 awards: 3 Special Gold, 14 Gold, and 31 Silver, showcasing the island’s exceptional tea quality and craftsmanship.

This achievement strengthens Ceylon Tea’s premium positioning in China, enhancing visibility among consumers and trade partners, and providing valuable momentum for future promotions.

Participation at the Second Beijing International Week of Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing (SLEMB-TPU) successfully organized Sri Lanka’s participation at the Second Beijing International Week of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held from 17th to 21st October 2025 in Beijing-China.

Represented by Imperial Tea Exports (Pvt) Ltd and Sinolan Teas (Pvt) Ltd through their Chinese agents, the event showcased the rich heritage and craftsmanship behind Ceylon Tea, promoting both the national brand and their respective company’s brand in one of the world’s most dynamic tea markets.

The Sri Lanka pavilion attracted strong attention for its cultural presentation, tea tastings, and storytelling, earning wide appreciation from visitors and media alike. This successful participation further strengthened Ceylon Tea’s image as a symbol of quality, authenticity, and tradition in the Chinese market.

Promotion of Ceylon Tea at the “Made in Sri Lanka – 8 Products – 8 Themes Expo 2025”

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing successfully hosted the Grand Opening Ceremony of the “Made in Sri Lanka – 8 Products – 8 Themes Expo 2025” on 27 September 2025, followed by a two-day exhibition held on 27 and 28 September 2025 at the Embassy premises. Among the eight product categories, Ceylon Tea took center stage as the flagship national product, symbolizing Sri Lanka’s heritage and global reputation. The tea sector was represented by the following leading Sri Lankan exporters under the coordination of the Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy:

Importantly, the entire event was organized at zero cost to the Sri Lanka Tea Board or the Government of Sri Lanka.

Participation of Xiamen International Tea Fair (Autumn Edition) 2025-China

“Xiamen International Tea Fair (Autumn Edition) 2025” trade exhibition was held from 16th – 20th October 2025 in Xiamen City, Fujian Province-China. Sri Lanka Tea Board together with the Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing organized the event with following Sri Lankan tea exporting companies under SLTB’s 50% trade fair subsidy scheme.

Sri Lanka Tea Board Participation at Anuga 2025 Trade Exhibition in Germany

We are pleased to provide an update on the highly successful Anuga 2025, the world’s leading trade fair for the food and beverage industry, held in Cologne, Germany, from October 4th to October 8th, 2025.

Anuga 2025 achieved record-breaking attendance, hosting over 8,000 exhibitors from 110 countries and attracting more than 145,000 trade visitors from over 190 nations. This exceptional turnout solidifies Anuga’s position as the premier global platform for the food and beverage industry, with a strong international presence, including key trade audiences from Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Brazil, China, Japan, Canada, and the USA.

Ceylon Tea Promotions in Chile

Chillan Tea consumers have always shown their love and loyalty for Ceylon Tea for decades. As a response to awareness building, the new Chillan tea buyers have also shown their keenness on buying pure Ceylon Tea packed in Sri Lanka in value added form to ensure its freshness in-addition to traditional bulk tea buying.

In this background, the Sri Lanka Tea Board together with Expo Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Uniworld Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Millennium Teas (Pvt) Ltd, and Ceylon Royal Teas (Pvt) Ltd successfully participated at Espasio Food Service Trade Exhibition held from 30th September to 2nd October 2025 in Santiago, Chile.

In addition to participation at the Trade Fair, the Sri Lanka Tea Board together with Expo Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Uniworld Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Millennium Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Ceylon Royal Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Empire Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Eswaran Brothers Exporters (Pvt) Ltd, Akbar Brothers (Pvt) Ltd and Dilmah Ceylon Tea (Pvt) Ltd successfully conducted a Ceylon Tea Tasting demonstration on 30th September 2025 which attracted a good audience at the Exhibition venue.

Further, the same group lead by the Tea Board also conducted anther Ceylon Tea Tasting demonstration at the Lunch-on meeting with Chillan Chamber of Gastronomy which is an important Hotels, Restaurants and Café related Chamber in Chile.  The Chillan Chamber of Gastronomy also showed its keenness to work with the Sri Lankan Tea and other releated Exporters for Mutual Corporation.

Mr. Dhanushka Karunaratne, Deputy Director, Sri Lanka Tea Board together with Mr. Sebasitan Vicuna, Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Chile participated and coordinated above activities with the support extended by Ms. Chathurika Perera, Charge de Affairs of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Brazil accredited to Chile.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board together with the Ceylon Tea industry awaits to expand further corporation with Chile for mutual benefit and to promote international trade.

        

The International Food Products and Processing Technologies Exhibition – WorldFood Istanbul

The International Food Products and Processing Technologies Exhibition – WorldFood Istanbul  is the most important international meeting point for the Turkish food industry and offers the opportunity to exhibit and discover the latest food innovations and tends in the sector.

Sri Lanka as the leading tea exporter to Turkey , Sri Lanka Tea Board organized a Ceylon Tea pavilion at WorldFood Isantbul Exhibition. The Exhibition was held from 2nd to 5th September 2025.

M/s. Imperial Tea (Pvt) Ltd, M/s. Heritage Teas ( Pvt) Ltd and M/s. Ceylon Tea Land (Pvt) Ltd participated under the Ceylon Tea pavilion showcasing their range of Ceylon Tea products at the Exhibition.

Ceylon Tea presence at Foodex Saudi Exhibition- 2025

The Sri Lanka Tea Board together with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh organized a Ceylon tea pavilion at the 12th edition of Foodex Saudi – 2025 which was held from 21 to 24 September 2025 at the International Convention & Exhibition Center in Riyadh, KSA.

M/s Saya International Tea and Food Exports (Pvt) Ltd, M/s Ceylon Tea Land (Pvt) Ltd, M/s Expoteas Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd, and M/s Heritage Teas (Pvt) Ltd showcased their tea brands under the Ceylon Tea pavilion.

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, H.E Ameer Ajwad officially declared open the Sri Lanka’s pavilion. In addition, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh organized business networking opportunities for the Sri Lanka trade delegation. This included visits to leading hypermarkets such as Aljazera Hypermarket and LuLu Hypermarket, where Sri Lankan exporters engaged directly with senior commercial teams of these hypermarket chain and potential tea buyers.

H.E. Ameer Ajwad also hosted a meeting with the participating companies along with the EDB and SLTB officials at the Embassy premises with a view to discussing challenges faced by the Sri Lankan food and beverages exporter companies into the Saudi market and to exploring ways and means to further enhance B2B interactions.

  

Positioning Ceylon Tea at the 8 Products 8 Themes Expo 2025/Opening Ceremony at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing-China | 27–28 September 2025

From 27–28 September 2025, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing proudly organized the 8 Products – 8 Themes Expo, marking the first-ever “Made in Sri Lanka” themed exhibition in China. At the Grand Opening Ceremony on 27 September, VIP guests and high-level trade delegations experienced the finest Ceylon Tea through a specially curated tasting session, positioning it as a premium lifestyle beverage in the Chinese market.

In addition to traditional tea offerings, the Embassy introduced innovative tea-infused products, including yogurt, buns, cakes, and biscuits, developed in collaboration with local partners. These products showcased the versatility and premium quality of Ceylon Tea, reinforcing its status as a flagship Sri Lankan export. The initiative significantly strengthened brand visibility, consumer awareness, and market positioning for Ceylon Tea in China.

Participation of Ceylon Tea at the China Liaoning International Fair for Investment and Trade 2025 (25–28 September 2025 | Liaoning Province, China)

The Tea Promotion Unit of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing (SLEMB-TPU) successfully represented Sri Lanka and the Ceylon Tea industry at the China Liaoning International Fair for Investment and Trade 2025, held from 25 to 28 September 2025 in Liaoning Province, China. For this purpose, the Embassy secured a 180 sqm fully constructed pavilion, completely free of cost, thereby enabling a strong national presence at no financial burden to the Sri Lanka Tea Board or the participating companies.

A total of six Sri Lankan tea-exporting companies showcased their products under the Ceylon Tea Pavilion:

The pavilion strengthened Ceylon Tea’s premium brand visibility, built valuable trade links with local distributors, and highlighted Sri Lanka as a trusted source of world-class tea, while also reinforcing the country’s image as a reliable trade partner in China.

10th China International Food & Catering Expo 2025

(19–21 September 2025 | Changsha City, Hunan Province, China)

The Tea Promotion Unit of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Beijing (SLEMB-TPU) successfully facilitated the participation of Chinese agents representing leading Ceylon Tea exporters at the 10th China International Food & Catering Expo 2025. Participating companies included:

A total exhibition space of 72 square meters, including pavilion construction, was fully negotiated free of cost by SLEMB-TPU. This arrangement not only reduced participation expenses but also provided maximum visibility for Ceylon Tea, enabling an impactful brand presentation in a largest provincial market in China.
Brief – Hunan Province

Hunan Province, located in south-central China, is a rapidly growing consumer market with a strong demand for premium imported beverages. This event marked the very first Ceylon Tea promotional campaign in Hunan, creating an important entry point into a previously untapped region. The expo attracted a wide spectrum of buyers, distributors, and trade visitors, allowing Ceylon Tea to establish direct business contacts, showcase product quality, and strengthen brand recognition in the local market.
Through interactive product displays, tastings, and brand engagement activities, the participating companies achieved substantial promotional mileage, including increased inquiries from local importers, enhanced awareness of Ceylon Tea among industry stakeholders, and strategic positioning as a premium tea brand. This initiative significantly contributed to long-term marketing efforts in central China and reinforced Sri Lanka’s commitment to expanding Ceylon Tea’s presence in emerging Chinese markets.

Conclusion:

Participation in the Changsha Expo represents a milestone in the promotional strategy for Ceylon Tea, combining high visibility, cost-effective engagement, and first-hand market exposure. The successful event strengthened trade relations, opened new distribution channels, and enhanced brand credibility in Hunan Province, laying the foundation for sustained market growth in central China.
